Make safety the first decision
Reduced flow during freezing weather is a warning to investigate safely. A visible split or active release needs attention to water isolation and electrical hazards. Do not use an open flame to thaw plumbing. If access is unsafe, stay clear and contact the appropriate emergency or utility service.
Prepare a cold-weather repair conversation
Describe the exposed location, whether water stopped or resumed, how long the issue has lasted and any visible damage. Ask how the failed section will be repaired and whether insulation, air leakage or repeated exposure needs a separate remedy. Repairing a pipe does not necessarily fix the condition that allowed it to freeze.
Plan prevention without blocking ventilation
TMWA recommends preparing irrigation and vulnerable plumbing before freezing conditions. Ask a professional how to protect the actual installation. Avoid blocking ventilation needed by equipment. Keep a familiar household shutoff accessible and document its location for others in the home.
Questions to ask about frozen & burst pipe problems
- Is the pipe exposed or in an unheated space?
- Has water stopped or begun leaking?
- Can you safely reach a familiar shutoff?
Does the quote include everything?
Ask about assessment charges, the proposed remedy, parts, testing and work excluded from the scope. Availability and charges depend on the independent business and actual property.
