Describe where the water appears
A wet cabinet, ceiling stain or damp wall is an observation, not a confirmed pipe diagnosis. Record when it appeared, whether a fixture was running and whether it returns after use. A plumber can compare supply, waste and fixture connections before recommending access.
Agree on investigation and access
Ask whether the quote covers inspection, testing, opening a wall, repairing the failed connection and returning for a leak check. Wallboard, cabinetry and water-damage drying may belong to a separate contractor. Confirm who handles those interfaces before work begins.
Stop further damage safely
Use a familiar, accessible shutoff only when you can do so safely. Stay clear of standing water near electrical equipment. Do not operate utility equipment or enter an unsafe crawl space. Photograph accessible damage and preserve receipts; this does not establish insurance coverage.
Questions to ask about leak detection & repair
- Is water still arriving?
- Which fixture or room is involved?
- Can the affected supply be safely isolated?
Does the quote include everything?
Ask about assessment charges, the proposed remedy, parts, testing and work excluded from the scope. Availability and charges depend on the independent business and actual property.
